Improvements to the road to Piton
Collaborative efforts between Piton and surrounding villages and groups
bring about big changes in village accessibility
From the bottom of Piton mountain to about three quarters of the way up to the top where Piton village is located (approx. 3,000 ft), the road is a concrete treadway (two concrete paths for tires) and is so steep with hairpin curves that certain vehicles can't manage it. But it's easy compared to the last third of the road to Piton! This section of the road is treacherous to say the least. Full of boulders and red clay, only the hardiest of vehicles can manage the climb. Mostly the road accommodates local foot travelers and motorcycles.
Around 2016, Dr. Tigar began working with our friends in Piton to move the largest boulders in the road for easier passage and also digging trenches to help guide rain water to mitigate washouts. As local residents saw the benefits to the road and their fields, the support and labor increased. This work continued off and on until 2022.
In late 2022, a coalition of villages and groups who call the mountain home began working together to lay tire strips up the last section leading to the top of the mountain where Piton & Piton West are situated. Piton Partnership invested financially in this work and we are seeing concrete (get it?) evidence of results.
